Watch parts on a bench

Why Klepsydra

The Case for Documented Bench Work

What sets Klepsydra apart is not a claim about being the best — it is the paper trail that lets you verify the work yourself.

What You Get

Six Reasons Clients Return

Written Documentation

Every piece leaves with a complete job record — measurements taken, parts exchanged, tests performed and their results. It is yours to keep and to show any future technician.

Stated Schedules

Three days for assessment. Two to three weeks for crystal and dial renewal. Six to ten weeks for complication overhaul. These are the actual schedules, not aspirational ones.

Flat-Rate Scope

Each service has a defined price. Consumables are included. Wear parts that need replacement are identified and approved before ordering — no surprise additions at collection.

Pressure-Tested Returns

Any case receiving crystal or gasket work is pressure tested against its original depth rating before it leaves the workshop. The result is documented.

24-Month Coverage

Complication overhaul work carries a 24-month service coverage period on the overhauled module. Terms are stated in the handover document, not abbreviated into a footnote.

George Town Location

Walk-in appointments at 118 Lebuh Armenian, in the UNESCO heritage district. Postal intake available for clients elsewhere in Malaysia with pre-confirmed scope.

In Depth

What Each Benefit Means in Practice

Expertise That Is Verifiable

Klepsydra's head watchmaker has been on the bench since 1999. The workshop has handled movements ranging from simple three-hand automatics to layered complications with calendar, chronograph and moon phase in a single module. That range matters because a technician who has only ever serviced one type of movement will sometimes misread what is wrong with another. The timing traces and job records we produce are the evidence — you do not have to take our word for it.

Process That Accounts for Sequence

Watch servicing has a correct order of operations. The assessment comes before the recommendation. Replacement parts are confirmed before ordering. Cleaning and lubrication precede timing. Timing precedes case closure. Case closure precedes pressure testing. When steps are skipped or reversed, faults that were fixed can re-emerge or new ones are introduced. Our schedules are set long enough to let each step complete before the next begins.

Technology Matched to the Piece

Sapphire is harder than acrylic but carries different optical properties. The correct choice depends on what the original crystal was and what the owner prefers. Our timing machine measures in real time across six positions — it does not average a single reading and infer the rest. We do not use a single lubricant for all applications; we use the grade the manufacturer's specifications indicate for each surface.

Service That Informs Rather Than Obscures

We take the position that the owner of a piece should understand what is happening to it. Rate reports explain what amplitude means. Parts lists identify components by reference, not just by category. When we recommend a particular service, we state the specific reading or observation that led to the recommendation. You should be able to disagree with us on the basis of the evidence, not just accept a recommendation because we said so.

Comparison

Our Approach vs Typical Workshop Practice

Common Patterns Elsewhere

  • Verbal quote with no breakdown of scope
  • Estimated completion date that moves repeatedly
  • No documentation of parts replaced
  • Crystal fitted without profile check
  • No pressure test after gasket change
  • Single-position timing at best
  • Coverage terms available only on request

Klepsydra's Standard

  • Flat-rate pricing with defined scope in writing
  • Stated schedule per service, held to
  • Parts list with reference numbers on job sheet
  • Correct-profile crystal sourcing as standard
  • Pressure test included, result documented
  • Six-position timing chart in every assessment
  • 24-month coverage stated plainly at handover

What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive Features of the Workshop

Assessment Credit

The RM 440 Timekeeping Assessment fee is credited in full against any subsequent service booked within sixty days. An owner who is unsure whether a piece needs work can get a factual reading first, without paying twice if they proceed.

Tropical Climate Awareness

Penang's humidity accelerates lubricant breakdown compared to conditions in temperate markets where most service intervals were established. Our assessment notes account for this, helping owners plan realistic schedules for their local environment.

Postal Intake Available

Clients outside Penang can arrange a postal intake. We confirm scope before they post, advise on packaging, acknowledge receipt promptly and return via tracked service. The documentation is identical to a walk-in job.

Heritage District Setting

Located on Lebuh Armenian in the UNESCO-listed George Town core zone. Walk-in clients are welcome during workshop hours. The address is straightforward to find and is on the same street as several established heritage businesses.
